Anchor Mere Farm has deep roots in Culpeper, Virginia, with a history that spans over 80 years. Owned and operated by father-daughter duo Dwayne and Kelly, along with their respective spouses Olive and Ted, the family farms just under 500 acres and is committed to sustainable farming practices and community connections. The farm’s story began in 1938 with Kelly’s grandfather Douglas and his father Ernest in Bantam, Connecticut, and continued its journey to Madison County Virginia in 1967 eventually settling in Culpeper in 1973, where the farm has evolved and grown.
Originally a dairy operation, the family transitioned in 2019 from milking cows to raising Angus cattle. Today, they manage about 125 head of Angus, grow crops like corn and soybeans, and have expanded their offerings to include grass-fed, grain-finished beef. Their Angus-Wagyu crosses are an exciting new addition that recently became available for purchase along with homegrown pork options such as chops, bacon, and a variety of sausage. The family also grows seasonal vegetables without the use of pesticides or herbicides, ensuring fresh, natural produce for their customers.
Anchor Mere Farm’s deep ties to 4-H and FFA are a source of pride. Dwayne, Olive, and Kelly were all involved in 4-H as children, and now the next generation is continuing the tradition. Kelly, who taught agriculture and served as an FFA advisor for 10 years, has shifted her focus to working full-time on the farm, with her three youngest children active in Culpeper’s 4-H and FFA clubs.
The family places great importance on sustainability, working with the Culpeper Soil and Water Conservation District to improve their pasture and participate in a stream exclusion program. They produce their own hay, raise pastured hens for eggs, and have recently focused on selling directly to local customers. Their attention to animal welfare and quality control ensures that the products they offer are raised from pasture to plate with care.
Anchor Mere Farm sells primarily through their online store which offers a streamlined way to shop. Customized halves and whole beef are available along with options to purchase beef, pork, and eggs one piece at a time or in bundles. The farm also now offers subscriptions.
